Tonight my wife and I were watching our Sunday night movie. The movie we chose was "Soul Surfer". The account of Bethany Hamilton who lost her left arm in a shark attack. She went on to become a professional surfer and inspiration to many.
As we watched I saw my wife struggle right along with Bethany. You see my wife was in a car accident when she was nineteen. Because of that accident she lost the use of her left arm. When Bethany picked up her Ukulele and realized she could not play it again I saw a tear in my wife's eye as she comment that was not going to happen. My wife was an accomplished flute player and she will never play again. I saw her sigh at every struggle Bethany had, because she struggled with her. She was shedding tears again for a life she once had. Yet she knows that the life she was given made her the person she is today.
Doctors told my wife she would never work again and that her life as she knew it was over. Yet just as Bethany struggled to surf again, my wife never gave up and owned three of her own companies. There was an article online not long ago where someone asked what it meant to be brave. I answered that with a simple statement that bravery was sacrifice. I realize today that we have to at times in our lives sacrifice what most people consider normal and make ourselves a new normal. That is something she does everyday. I realized that the perfect example of bravery was sitting next to me every day. Her greatest gift is her humility, in that she never realizes how brave she is. I am so very proud to call her my wife.
