I am watching you

We have a cat named Patches and from the first day we got her she seems to like to follow me around and watch everything I do. She is particularly fascinated when I take a shower or shave. The first time she came into the bathroom and saw me in the shower she would paw at the door. When I would get out she would Then watch me shave, following me to the kitchen to watch me make my coffee and breakfast. It is as she was waiting for me to do one particular thing I do not know what that thing is as of yet because after three years she is still watching. We are all being watched and it is not to see what we are doing right but to wait until we do something wrong. Whether you are a Pastor, Rabbi, Chaplin or lay man. No matter what you believe, whether you be a Christian, Muslim, Pagan, Atheist or Jewish. People are watching waiting for that chance when they can point at you and say ‘Look at that hypocrite”.

“In such an age as this, when there is so little sound conviction, when principle is cast  to the winds, and when a general latitudinarianism, both of thought and practice,  seems to rule the day, it is still the fact that a man who is decided in his belief, speaks his mind boldly, and acts according to his profession, is sure to command the reverence of mankind.”

This was said by Charles Spurgeon over one hundred years ago and it is just as applicable today as it was back then. The word integrity means wholeness or to be complete the Bible describes a man of integrity as upright or blameless. Jesus described the religious leaders of His time in Matthew 15:8 as men lacking integrity when He said ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”  A man if integrity speaks the truth all the time, he is the same at home, at work and in private. Whether on the internet, doing your taxes or dealing with others he will consistently choose to do the right thing. There is an every growing lack of integrity in our world. This world is in desperate need of men who keep their word as leaders in our homes, our work places, our churches and our government.

There is nothing to fear as a man of integrity. Mark Twain said: “Speaking honestly is better. It takes a lot of stress out of our lives. If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything, but if you don’t tell the truth you have to remember what you said.”  If you live a life of integrity you have nothing to fear what you will have is peace. As a man of integrity you do not have to expend untold amounts of energy covering your tracks. Constantly looking over your shoulder not only gives you emotional stress but a nasty kink in your neck. Integrity will provide you with the security to know that the path I am walking is the right one. Proverbs 10:9 - the man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.

When I do my testing at work I look at what is on the inside. I have had patients that appear totally healthy when they walk into my room only to find a cancer growing on the inside. Without this testing they would have never known they were sick. So how can we test our lives against a man of integrity? David was a man of integrity was called a man after God’s own heart. In Psalm 15 he gives some areas we can test.

Psalm 15:3

He who does not backbite with his tongue,Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend

We show our integrity in our relationships with others, instead of backstabbing, gossiping or lying about others. Integrity calls us to build people up and treat them with respect. It is far more productive to exalt someone than it is to tear them down.

Psalm 15:4

In whose eyes a vile person is despised,But he honors those who fear the LORD;

A man of integrity puts character above everything else. There are those that have obtained massive amounts of wealth and yet are the poorest people I know because they have no integrity. Integrity should be placed above all wealth, popularity or position. As a man of integrity we should despise deception and honor those that walk with God. And honor others who walk with integrity.

Psalm 15:4b

“who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind”

A man if integrity keeps his promises. When my children were growing up they knew there was one thing that never would change. If I promised them something that it would come true. Sometimes I had to make sacrifices to keep that promise, yet that is what a man of integrity is called to do. A man of integrity pays his debts and keeps his vows no matter what the cost.

Psalm 15:5

He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent

A man of integrity cannot be bought at any price; he will not allow money to corrupt him. He does not steal; he pays a fair wage and does not lie on his taxes. He treats everyone with fairness and honesty. A man of integrity is am man that can be trusted in all things.

Integrity does not come easy and is not easy to maintain, it will take discipline and commitment. Integrity is something we need to, have to work on every day of lives. It takes courage to walk with integrity, especially in a world that is so lacking in it. The last commitment is to find those that will hold you accountable. Whether it be family or close friends, integrity requires accountability and in return promise them that you to will hold them accountable in the same way. I remember a quote I do not remember the source but it says this; “Physical courage will make a man strong on one way. Moral courage to stand in integrity will make a man strong in many way to numerous to count”

This is based on a talk I gave to the men at church last Saturday. I think there is something for all of us in it. Remember to play nice.

Wonderful article and a great reminder to me.

I admit to stumbling all too often along the path when my human nature is given to free a reign.

Thank you.

Dear Friend Hiram: "A man of integrity keps his promises". In support of this key point, I am reminded from Mishley (Proverbs) of this statement. "Shem tov como shemen tov". A good name is like a precious oil".

How can deal with us if they cannot trust us? This is as true in the community of commerce as it is in interpersonal relations, as you eloquently pointed out.

Thanks for contributing this article. It is instructional, thought provoking and inspirational.

Peace and Blessings. Enoch.

Great article, Hiram! Words are so easily delivered these days, but action is far more important to me, and much more believable.

Thank you for the encouragement. Actions always speak louder, especially when we are alone. That perhaps is the greatest test of integrity. Those times when we think no one is looking.

Well spoken.

Such a simple concept, yet so hard to blend it seamlessly into our self. It always helps to have guidance. For that, I thank you.

Great article. It carries a great deal of thought. I am intrigued by the your use of the word 'integrity.' It is a value, that. It is a value rare in dead and action. It screams for perfection, but used properly, it also reflects love and commitment.

I am sorry I can not attribute this quote, but I think it is excellent.

"The test of true integrity is what we do when no one is looking."

For me someone is always looking and yet I still fail at times. The test then comes by owning up to that failure which is the hardest part of being a person of integrity.

A very true article Hiram! When I feel I haven't shown integrity in an action, I feel acute shame and humiliation. Guess we can also call that a guilty conscience? It was always very important to me to show not only my children, but also people I've had to deal with, integrity and honesty. It might be difficult at times, but in the long run it surely makes life much easier! :-)

Pretty cat, it's face resembles my kitty's, especially the big eyes and pink nose! ♥

You are so correct it makes a great difference in the long run. Our integrity is one thing we can pass on to our children and pray they hold on to it and value it above everything.

Very thoughtful article, Hiram. I totally agree with the main thrust of it. Integrity is in short supply these days. The only thing I could find fault with is your constant use of the word 'man' to describe someone who walks with integrity. Women can also have integrity. I'm guessing it wasn't meant to come across that way but that you were using the word much like someone might say 'mankind' etc.

Grisham

It was a talk I gave to a mens group and I tried to revamp to but perhaps missed a few points. It does apply to all integrity is not gender bias it is all inclusive. It goes beyond belief, race, gender and all economic barriers.

Originally, it was the cat that caught my eye - so the article was totally unexpected as I read on. Hope you don't miss some posters on this excellent article on the virtues of integrity.

The immediate reaction afterwards, for me, was to apply this to the way our respective economies and governments are being run, both in the US and Europe. Governance, today, seems little concerned about Integrity, and politicians even less so. We are seeing the US's current presidential race and how those, in positions of power, debase integrity by applying less of it onto their opposite numbers, and seemingly filling themselves up from the integrity font at the same time in some misguided belief that they deserve more of the stuff.

How do all their shananigans affect the population? This is what concerns me. The impact of our leaders, who should be setting the example of honesty, truth and the many other virtues of which you describe in your article, are sorely missing. They dumb-down integrity into a place of worthlessness simply because they, seemingly, have no respect for it. When will we see real integrity in governance? - or am I on a lost cause here, Hiram? Are my expectations too high?

Sorry - I am always here to stick another Brit angle on what started out so simple in your article.

    Are my expectations too high?

This one question sums it up I believe. No your expectations are not to high, I believe those in charge have set their expectations to low. We all only have control over ourselves that is a fact that cannot change. However if we all hold each other accountable then we can change the system as a whole. That is where we have fallen short many times here in American our political leaders put party loyalty over integrity, when in fact true loyalty demands integrity. Pettiness is an infectious disease that will eat at ones integrity until it is non-existent. We as a people have been given the honor and responsibility to elect people fo integrity and because of the party pettiness we have failed miserably. Your expectations are not to high my friend the higher we reach the more we expect the better things will become.

This line resonated with me and I feel it is very true. I find myself doing/saying that a lot lately while watching what's going on in current affairs. Enjoyed the article Hiram. Patches is such a beauty!
